Brookfield Rail is the manager and operator of the State’s 5,500 kilometre open access, multi-user rail freight network extending throughout the southern half of Western Australia.
Owned by global asset management company, Brookfield Infrastructure Partners L.P., Brookfield Rail is one of the few independent rail infrastructure providers in the world focussed solely on below-rail infrastructure management and access provision.
Following privatisation of the State Government Railways in 2000, Brookfield Rail was awarded the exclusive long-term lease from the West Australian State Government to manage its rail freight network.
As the only rail freight network in the southern half of Western Australia, Brookfield Rail’s network is vital to providing access to the eastern states of Australia and overseas markets through the region’s six government-owned ports.
Brookfield Rail has invested over $1.2 billion in the freight rail network and associated infrastructure over the last five years, transforming the network and building a reliable and robust critical piece of transport infrastructure for the future of Western Australia’s economy.
Since 2011, tonnages moved on our rail network have more than doubled, increasing by about 113%, with net tonnages for 2013 reaching over 71 million.
